Elder Kirkham's Letter 4-4-16

Good afternoon! I have two weeks to summarize here since I was so caught up with my new calling last week that I didn't say anything about the stuff that happened that week.

So on Monday I had an unexpected miracle, followed by a slightly less miraculous miracle that I still appreciated. The most important thing that happened is that I found out Francisco, the guy that I taught in Rose Park but couldn't baptize because he wouldn't go to the right ward, moved into the ward he was attending and got baptized! The elders in the area didn't know I had taught him, which is why they didn't invite me. But it was really nice to find out that he finally got to join the church. The second little miracle was that I found a really nice deal on a new pair of shoes for Conference. Payless had a sale on literally the entire store.

Tuesday there was a big meeting for all the leadership, then we went to visit some of our  investigators. Julio and Keyshla answered, as did Cristina and Michael. We were mainly trying to make sure everyone was invited to General Conference, which is also what we did for most of Wednesday and Thursday. We also had to give a lot of emotional support to Sister Platt, who was straight up going insane from the stress of going home. Just to illustrate, this is what happened on Friday. So we went to district meeting, and Sister Silverhardt (her companion who is allergic to literally every food on earth except potatoes, rice, and meat) made a strange comment that caught my attention. I investigated a little, and found out that Sister Silverhardt was completely without food she could eat because they hadn't had time to go grocery shopping. And Sister Platt had grown such an unhealthy obsession

with staying obedient her last week that she refused to ask permission to go emergency shopping! I'm not blaming her, really, because I know she wasn't in a normal state of mind. So we ended up going grocery shopping that afternoon before our temple square lesson with Cristina and Michael.

Saturday was when we got the call that we were both being called to new leadership positions, and we spent the rest of the weekend preparing Mount Ensign 3rd to be without missionaries and Arbor to be whitewashed. And Cristina and Michael came to church for the first time! They stayed all three hours, too.

So, that takes us to this week. Monday we had to pack, I was freaking out because I got another college acceptance, and the wonderful Madrid family had us over for dinner to say goodbye. The Gonzalez Gonzalez family also had us come over to say goodbye, which was really sweet. They have a son with Down syndrome that just loves to talk to us.

Tuesday we had a ton of meetings with President, including a new leaders' training and a district leaders' training. I really enjoyed them because they put to rest a lot of my doubts and fears about how to be a leader. He trained us on the spiritual side of it and on the administrative side, including how to do accountability (numbers) and how to run a district meeting. By the time those were over we were starving, so we had a late lunch and met up with a member of ME3 who drove some of our stuff over to my new apartment in his trailer. We also got to help at the stake pinewood derby by translating for the families who didn't speak English.

Wednesday was long. First we had to finish up moving, and then I went to my first Zone Leadership Council. That was interesting, but we didn't seem to get much done. Then we had a correlation with our new WML in Buena Vista. He's super fired up about missionary work and was quoting The Power of Everyday Missionaries almost every sentence. I look forward to working with him. We were supposed to meet some of our investigators that night, but nobody was home and we ended up walking a TON. I'm so out of shape!

Thursday was much of the same. We did some cleaning because the apartment just had some construction done to fix a leak and everything is covered in drywall dust. Then we took some time to study the area book together. A lot of the data got lost in the transition, but we're working with what we have. Then at 2 we went outside and walked. All. Day. We got to teach one lesson to a less active family that didn't know church starts at 1 now, and I think they're going to come next Sunday because of the time change. Nobody else was home.

Friday I ran my first district meeting, and it went well. Apparently I went longer than I was supposed to, but I can fix that next week. Then we did weekly planning and went out to visit some people. While we were out, a couple of guys pulled to the side of the road and invited us to come to the stake center, where one of them was having a wedding reception. We didn't have a dinner for the night, so we took them up on that offer and spent our dinner hour there. It was good food, although crashing was a tiny bit awkward. And while we were there, an RM couple came up to us and started talking all about their missions. The guy had been a district leader, so he told me some of the things he did to help his district along. And his girlfriend kept making comments about how I should find a wife as soon as I get home. Geez, you'd think they understand that I don't want to get trunky... ;)

Conference was amazing! Of course I saw Mom, and she bought us enough groceries to last us the rest of the month, and the talks were AMAZING (I'm using them in every district meeting I plan for the rest of my mission!) and I think I got an answer to my prayers about which college I should go to. I'll explain that in a separate email.

Have an awesome spring break, everyone! And Mom, Mariah, and Tavia, please stay safe on the road home. I love you tons!

Love,
Spencer
