Elder Kirkham's Letter 5-2-16

Holy moly, it's May already! And as someone just reminded me, it's
going to be an eventful week. Wednesday is Star Wars day, and then we
get to Skype on Sunday. And N turns 5 on Monday! I think he's been
pretty excited for a while now to turn five...

This week was very similar to last week, with lots of finding and
similar stuff. We got to meet with Pati, the woman I told you about
last Monday, who we had street contacted. She invited us right in and
told us she is Catholic but interested in what we believe and what
makes us different from other faiths. We took that as an invitation to
teach the restoration and proceeded to do so, and that's where the
lesson got interesting. She asked, in different words, "So what is the
one and only true church?" I knew she was expecting a different
answer, but I said, "The only true church on the earth today is the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." She seemed a little
surprised at that kind of bold statement, but then launched into an
explanation of why the Catholic Church is the true one. Sigh... But
then she surprised us by asking us to come back the next Monday. We'll
see how that goes. After that lesson, we went to visit a less active
woman that the RS president asked us to see. We had tried three or
four times, so I didn't expect her to let us in this time. But she
did, and we showed her the "Because of Him" video. It was a cool
lesson and she said she'd do her best to be at church on Sunday.

Tuesday was really busy! We had breakfast with the stake MLS couple,
dinner with our relief society president (who gave us each a MOUNTAIN
of rice), basketball with the young men to work on fellow shipping
that one that President Love asked Elder Dixon to work with, and two
lessons. The first lesson was with Silvino, the Guatemalan we found
last week. He had read a few pages from the Book of Mormon, so even though he
didn't make it to church he is still doing great. We taught him the
restoration and he was very quiet and thoughtful through the whole
thing. He's going to progress slowly since we can only meet him on
Tuesdays, but I think he'll progress very steadily toward baptism. The
other lesson was with a less active family who says they can't go to
church because their (premie) baby isn't well enough. They said
they'll be there in two weeks... So we'll see what happens in two
weeks.

Not much happened on Wednesday except walking around to contact
potential investigators, and Thursday was mostly taken up with weekly planning. But
we had another lesson with Fidel on Thursday night, once again with
Jesus. He had more questions, but this time it felt kind of
energy-less for some reason. We have suspicions that he's only
studying with us because his mother-in-law wants him to, but I don't
want that to be true. He's just too honest of a truth seeker to lose
him to something like that!

Long story short, we started district meeting forty-five minutes late,
and nobody seemed to see a problem with that except my companion ...
It became extremely stressful for me trying to cram
the whole meeting into the remaining forty-five minutes,

Saturday we decided to do something a little different, since we had a
rare day with absolutely nothing planned. We did our best to visit
every potential investigator in the area book, especially the ones we
hadn't tried before. Not only were we able to meet some new people and
set appointments for next week, but we also got into some sections of
the branch that neither of us had ever visited before, which was
really good. We also got to do some good street contacting along the
way.

Sunday was definitely the highlight of the week. We found out in the
morning that President Love and one of his counsellors took the
initative to visit the Tafur family, and that they had even arranged
for the two sons to get a ride to church since their parents were
working. They came, and Hno. P., the counsellor, basically took
them in hand  the whole time. He's from Peru same as them, and made
the trip to the US at about the same age, so he identifies a lot with
them. They enjoyed church and I'm sure they'll be back next week. Then
after church we made contact with a referral that came to us through
the church system, found out they prefer English, and passed them off
to the other elders just a few minutes later when we ran into them on
the street.

Today has been busy as well, with shopping and haircuts. We found a
member who is currently in school to be a barber, so he gave us nice,
fresh haircuts for Mother's Day. Can't wait for that, by the way!
I'll be ready around 9, UT time. Good luck with all the big tests,
everyone, and have a great week!

Love,
Spencer
